A Rakateis's icy beak and talons are strong enough to pierce the thickest ice or frozen material. They can stand firmly on slick, vertical ice sheets while drilling holes for nests.
Climbers scaling icy summits should always be wary of ice that has been weakened by Rakateis activity. Some people find their ability to pierce solid ice helpful, however, and a few people bring Rakateis on climbs with them to create hand and footholds.
